Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare model that will eliminate free overhead cabin luggage for its cheapest tickets on short and medium-haul flights. The current Economy Light fare permits passengers to carry both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, with the upcoming Economy Basic fare, travelers will be limited to a small personal item that can be stowed under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.
For those wishing to bring a larger cabin suitcase, an upgrade to a higher fare tier or payment of an additional fee will be necessary. This change is slated for trial from April 28 for flights beginning on May 19 on select routes. If successful, the airline plans to expand this fare structure across its European network. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which includes carriers like Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti.
The airlines claim that this adjustment offers greater flexibility and enables passengers traveling light to enjoy lower fares. However, frequent travelers who need to carry cabin luggage may not see significant savings once baggage fees are included in the overall cost. This change is expected to mostly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who often depend on cabin baggage to dodge checked luggage fees and reduce airport waiting times.
Travelers are encouraged to scrutinize fare conditions thoroughly before booking. It is advised to compare the total travel cost, which includes baggage fees, rather than just the ticket’s advertised price. For those journeying with only a personal item, the new fare might present a cost-effective option. However, for many, the most affordable ticket might not constitute the lowest overall travel cost anymore.
