Bulgarian PM Radev Utilizes Market Tools to Address Rising Prices

Bulgaria’s newly-elected Prime Minister Roumen Radev has announced that his government will avoid introducing price ceilings, opting instead to utilize various market economy tools to address rising prices and streamline retail chains. Speaking after Parliament confirmed his government on May 8, Radev emphasized that tackling escalating prices is a top priority. He mentioned that legislative changes are being devised to improve pricing transparency and curb unfair competition, with proposed higher sanctions and enhanced control measures targeting violators of competitive norms.

Radev underscored the importance of supporting Bulgarian producers by preventing practices that compel them to sell at cost, which adversely impacts sectors like dairy and livestock farming. He called for collaboration among producers to facilitate smoother market access. During his Cabinet’s first meeting, Radev outlined key goals for his administration, including judicial reform, anti-corruption measures, and priorities in healthcare, education, transportation infrastructure, and the business environment. A thorough department analysis focusing on financial health and existing contracts will guide the drafting of the state Budget.

The Prime Minister stressed the commitment to dismantling the oligarchic model through an energetic government approach to corruption. Radev highlighted the relevance of an independent Prosecutor’s Office and a new Supreme Judicial Council, alongside proposals for comprehensive judicial reform aimed at delivering faster and fairer justice. The government will work with the National Assembly to appoint a new, independent Prosecutor General, he added.

Radev’s economic agenda includes enhancing Bulgaria’s investment climate by reducing regulations and boosting digitalization and electronic services. The modernization of the Bulgarian military and the fight against crime, including drug trafficking, are also priorities. In foreign policy, Radev stressed the need for constructive engagement and safeguarding Bulgarian interests within international alliances.

Education reforms targeting functional literacy improvement, the expedited construction of the National Children’s Hospital, and addressing pharmaceutical abuses are among the healthcare priorities. Social welfare, transport connectivity, energy autonomy, and food security are also on Radev’s agenda. He aims to balance business, production, and environmental considerations while promoting Bulgarian culture, heritage, tourism, and youth sports development.
