In a significant escalation of the Ukraine conflict, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv and its surrounding areas, employing the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for the third time. This attack resulted in the deaths of at least four people and injuries to approximately 100 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. The strikes targeted Kyiv and the nearby city of Bila Tserkva, causing extensive damage to residential buildings, schools, a water facility, government offices, and a major market. Fires erupted across several districts as a result of the bombardment.

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the use of the Oreshnik missile as a dangerous escalation, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the actions as reckless. The European Union accused Russia of employing terror tactics against civilians. The Oreshnik missile, introduced by Russia in late 2024, is noted for its ability to carry nuclear or conventional warheads and its purported hypersonic speed, which Russian President Vladimir Putin claims makes it nearly impossible to intercept, although these assertions have been met with skepticism by Western analysts.
